SAIH Satirical #Ad Featuring Michael The Child Fundraising Actor

Nov 21, 2013

Norwegian charity SAIH has put its foot down and is now giving us an in-depth behind-the-scenes look at how fundraising ads are really made. Following Michael, an African ‘fundraising actor’, they show how Africans in these commercials are not always what they seem.

…Okay fine they lied, there is no such thing as charity actors. This satirical video was created to spread creativity and break down the stereotypical ads that currently infest television channels.  It is refreshing to see an organization develop a campaign to address the dilemma of stereotypical cookie-cutter charity advertisements for developing nations.

This isn’t the first time that they have created a satirical ad highlighting the negativity that these advertisements can cause. Below is the “Radi-Aid” commercial from last Christmas, whose premise is; “Imagine if every person in Africa saw the “Africa for Norway” video, and this was the only information they ever got about Norway. What would they think about Norway?”

Following up on last year’s campaign, they have created the 2013 Rusty Radiator Awards. The goal of it is to promote creative ads that create engagement built on knowledge, not on stereotypes.  An international group of judges have nominated 8 videos (4 stereotypical ones and 4 creative ones) from which the Internet will judge the winners of the Rusty Radiator and Golden Radiator Award.

The event will be streamed live on December 10th, 2013. Check out the submissions (one of them features 50 Cent) over here.
