Pool, Loss Of Color
Named ‘Pool, Loss Of Color’, the piece is a three-dimensional optical illusion that gives the impression of a deep swimming pool. It is massive, measuring about 50 feet. The illusion was paced right in the centre of a shopping mall in Japan.
For A Cause
Jeroen Bisscheroux created the illusion to draw attention to the current devastation that occurred due to the enormous earthquake and Tsunami in 2011, in north-east Japan.
Triggering a triple meltdown in the Fukushima nuclear plant, the earthquake forced at least 160,000 people from nearby town to flee their homes and most them still haven’t been allowed to return.
The Swimming Pool
When you view the painting from the perfect angle, you can stand on its edges and give off the impression that you are staring into a body of water. If you want to look like you’re doing the back float in the deep end, you simply need to recline on the surface of the ‘pool’.
A Painting On A Carpet
Bisscheroux’s painting was drawn on a flat carpet and put it on display in Osaka, Japan. The painting abstractly transforms the two natural disasters to human scale, according to the artist. Pool, Loss Of Color is hoped to draw focus to the problems surrounding the nuclear plant, and emphasize the timeliness of events.
It’s All About Perspective
When you view the painting from a distance, it looks like the perfect two-dimensional swimming pool, but when you come a little closer, not so much. Described as a carpet, Bisscheroux hopes that it serves as a soft, inviting and genial place that is explored.
