Wi-Fi Hotspot Rock – German Engineering
Stone w/ full equipment - solar & windcraft driven public art project from Dortmunder-Kunstverein on Vimeo.
If you ever thought that Germans could engineer anything they see, well now you have proof. Except among the four artists who came up with the idea of equipping a rock sculpture with Wi-Fi and Power, one of them was Norwegian.

Historic Future
The Artists Lutz-Rainer Müller, Thomas Woll, Ådlandsvik, and Mark Pepper, quite beautifully mix the past with the future. Initially, they wanted to combine the future with the earliest roots of sculpture, maybe a rock sculpture, but they eventually settled on concrete that looks like a rock. This sculpture definitely symbolizes the Germany’s bridge between the Past and Future.
Stein Mit Vollausstattung
This is the name of the rock sculpture, Stein Mit Vollausstattung – it roughly translates to “fully equipped rock”. It is equipped with eight power outlets, a Wi-Fi Hotspot, and four public lockers that can charge electronic devices.
But What Is The Point?
The Stein is made completely self-efficient, powered by a wind turbine and 2 solar panels. Many of us are still under the impression that alternative sources of energy such wind and solar are not for metropolises. But the Stein openly defies this pre-conceived impression, and aims to stimulates public conversation about green energies.
A City Of Nature
Everyone likes nature, maybe we don’t always have the time to go traveling and hiking, but if we had the chance, we would find it pleasing. Many countries try to incorporate nature within their city boundaries, and this rock is a fine accomplishment.
