International Drone Photography Awards
Drone photography is still in its nascent stages but boy, is it making a splash! Here are some spectacular examples of this art form from the recently concluded International Drone Photography Awards.

Winning Entries
Birds in particular capture our imaginations in sublime ways. This photograph, taken by Capungaero at Bali Barat National Park in Indonesia, won the first place. It’s the closest we can come to experiencing the wonder of flight from the comfort of an armchair, for now.
Kids and adults alike, frozen in a moment of joy, and possibly a slight sense of wonder at being photographed by a drone. This image evokes a feeling of camaraderie and intimacy. Placed second in the contest, it was taken by Jericsaniel in Manila, Phillippines.
France has a unique charm that this photo, which ranked third, brings to the forefront. Taken by Drone-cs in Annecy, France, it fills the viewer with memories of warm summers and freshly baked french bread. The spectrum makes an appearance to add a certain unearthliness to this photograph.
Grandeur and majesty put on an enthralling show in this otherworldly view of the Tamul Waterfall. Light and dark are balanced on a knife’s edge, and serve to highlight the beauty of something as simple, yet wondrous as falling water. This vista was captured by Postandfly, and placed first in the ‘Most Liked’ category.
The church steeple lends an air of classy elegance to this photograph of the quaint sea town. The mountains visible in the distance, and the mirror-like sea highlight our ability to co-exist with the environment, should we choose to do so. Jams69 took this photo at sanary-sur-mer, France, and was second place in the ‘Most Liked’ category.
This aerial view of a stadium framed by fireworks shows us just how visually appealing a stadium can be. A sparkling oasis in a sea of black, a truly magnificent shot. Captured by IceFire in Spofia, Bulgaria, it came in third in the ‘Most Liked’ category.
The Contest
The contest was announced by Dronestegram in conjunction with National Geographic on March 15, 2014 to showcase the possibilities of drone photography.
