Starring Tom Hardy, the movie almost feels like an abstract answer to the question of what would happen if the art of film-making was stripped down to its simplest and most elemental form.
Superb Direction
Released on April 18, 2014 in the United Kingdom and April 25, 2014 in the United States, the movie showcases the directional expertise of Steven Knight who is known for his superb writing for “” and “”.
Hardy Does It Again
Tom Hardy’s portrayal of Ivan Locke in the movie is nothing short of brilliant, and exhibits a riveting exercise in voice, facial expression and that mysterious x-factor known as charisma. His performance has an ineffable command presence that grabs the audience by its collective throat and never, ever slips.
The Plot
You won’t believe what the plot for this movie is. Minimalistic in every sense, it is pretty much just this – Ivan Locke is a construction foreman who’s driving down to London. He has left an important job in Birmingham and the simply tries to settle stressful personal and professional problems on his mobile phone while having imaginary conversations with his long deceased father along the way.
Locke And The Car
From the plot, you would have probably gathered that the entire movie is shot inside that car.. And outside from time to time, when the car’s reflective surfaces are shown. Locke is shown as a man bathed in the jaundiced glow of streetlights and his own sickened realization that the life he has so carefully constructed is on the brink of implosion.
Nail Biting Thriller
Making the journey in his BMW in the late evening, setting out at around 8pm, with fairly light traffic, Locke’s tension keeps inexorably building as the movie progresses. One of the most nail-biting thrillers of the year, this movie is a must-see.
