Meet Samantha French
Samantha French was born in Nisswa, Minnesota and grew up in the centre of the Brainerd Lakes Area. In 2005, she graduated from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, and has since pursued her interest in painting. Her work has been exhibited across the USA, and also included in many private and public collections.
Her Paintings
Samantha’s paintings generally follow a culture of summer cabins and weekend getaways for Twin Citians. She draws inspiration from ‘lake life’, her memories of childhood summers, as well as her profound bond with home. Her paintings showcase dynamic waterscapes with every detail present – from sunlight on the water, the color tone underwater, to air bubbles and the aquatic atmosphere.
Graceful Weightlessness
As simmers float, dive and push around the surface of the water in Samantha’s paintings, the artwork seems to incorporate into it a quiet solitude that can only be felt under water. She used a palette of bold colors and active compositions to create a feeling of graceful weightlessness on canvas.
Recreating Bliss
As Samantha says, she simply tries to recreate the hushed tranquility from her vague memories of summers spent immersed in the beautiful lakes of Minnesota. The paintings depict the days that she passed still and peacefully, sinking and floating in water and nature. Helping her find a link to her home satisfying her perpetual quest for warm summer days at the lake, these paintings act as a subtle reprieve from everyday monotony for Samantha.
